Please feel free to send us your feedback on the new site and let us know if you have anything you would like to see on our website.
Stay Tuned! There will be several new elements added to the website over the next several months meant to enhance your experience. Make sure to "Like us" on Facebook to receive information on updates to the website and to stay on top of STAA activities.
Don't forget the Quarterly Meeting is being held Saturday, 14 April at the John Igo Library. See the link to the left for details.
STAA Needs Your Help!
Professional archaeologist, avocational archaeologist, historian, interested member, students and potential members - STAA NEEDS YOUR HELP!! The task of running STAA and providing quality quarterly meetings and speakers, and field/lab work has fallen to just a few members on the Board. In order for us to continue to provide the current level of education, support, and potential growth we need volunteers!
Members can participate in all aspects of running the organization: Membership Committee, Newsletter Committee, Scholarship Program, Photography, Publicity, Webmaster/Social Media, Registration, Awards Committee, and Documentation.
Interested in helping out, but are unsure of what might be a good fit, indicate what interests you have on the form and one of our leadership will get in touch with you.
If you are interested in helping STAA grow, please take a few minutes to fill out this form and either email it to Matthew Harwood or send it snail mail to the address at the bottom of the form. Your participation is vital to helping STAA continue to grow and thrive so we might provide meaningful activities to our members.
STAA Is Looking For A Principal Investigator!
The STAA is looking for a Principal Investigator to help run it's field activities. Field experience is an integral part of the archaeological experience and an important part of STAA's educational opportunities and mission. At this time, we are in need of a Principal Investigator to provide leadership and for continuation of this key component in archaeology. Field work schedules can be flexible upon the availability of an Investigator.
The position of Principal Investigator is not compensated and the Principal Investigator will be required to attend monthly board meetings. Qualifications for the position of Principal Investigator are determined by the Texas Administrative Code (Title 13, Part 2, Chapter 26, Rule §26.5, (52)).
If you are interested or would like to request more information, please email Matthew Harwood or Marybeth Tomka.
Lab Work
Lab Days will be held at the Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA-CAR) from 9 a.m. until noon. Please make sure you attend at least one laboratory day if you would like to participate in a dig. You will gain valuable information on what the site is about, and what kinds of artifacts we are looking for. Participation in lab work is a vital part of what archaeology is, and if you want to learn all aspects of archaeology, this is your chance. Space is limited so please reply to our Lab Director, Marybeth Tomka to be included. We look forward to seeing you there!
Lab work will be held the first Saturday of every month (except November). Please see the schedule below to stay up-to-date!

2012 Annual Meeting
A special thanks to everyone who was able to attend our 2012 Annual Meeting at the John Igo Library! We had a fantastic turnout. For those able to attend, we hope you were able to pick up your copy of Stone Artifacts of Texas Indians and have it signed by authors E. Sue Turner, Thomas Hester, Richard McReynolds, and Harry Shafer. If you weren't able to make it, but are interested in picking up your copy of the revised 3rd edition, see the section below to order your copy from Amazon.com.
The meeting kicked off with Board elections. Congratulations to the 2012 Executive Committee. Assuming the mantle of Chair is Matthew Harwood. Taking his place as Vice-Chair is Christa Watson. Returning as Secretary and Treasurer are Candy Smith and Lee Gummelt (respectively).
After the elections, members were treated to an update on Fools Rock Shelter. Artifacts and data collected from the STAA sponsored excavations are in the analysis phase. The analysis requires one more radiocarbon date. If you would like to donate funds to help accomplish this please click the PayPal link below.
It was with great honor that we were able to host a presentation by Harry Shafer entitled The Toyah Phenomenom in Central Texas that explored such topics as trade and hunting methods of the Toyah in Texas.
